  • GJ - I was reading Uncle Chuck's book on the Confessions, and that reminded me about how many fine Lutheran authors have been confined to the sub-basement by the denominations. Thank you, Alec Satin, for providing so many choices, such easy access with beautiful color art.

Roses at the Doctor's Office - Instant Humility.
Rain Predicted - I Emptied the Rain Barrels

Peace rose - the receptionist went "eek!" when I mentioned how spiders protect the roses.

Sassy came outside with me to harvest roses for the doctor's office. She set up a defensive perimeter and scanned in all directions. If she goes on alert, there is always a reason:

    1. Children to befriend.
    2. Cats to watch.
    3. Dogs barking that need some sassing back.

Sassy will also do things and make noises to get her staff to follow her directions. Her newest tactic is the emphatic sit down, which means she wants to go another direction or stay to see someone. It was a quiet morning - no more school traffic - so we went inside after the roses were in the vase.

This PA does not care for roses, so I gathered them for the front desk.

    • More Veterans Honor roses were in full bloom.
    • Easy Does It was blooming but also needed pruning.
    • Peace had a perfect rose for the vase.

We walked into a big line at the doctor's office. "Busier than McDonalds at rush hour," I said. The woman in front of me commented on the roses, so I told her, "We had a front yard full." She said, "My daddy planted 1500 around his property. He grafted each one first." We had an interesting convesation, especially since her father also used Creation principles, avoiding all toxins. I went from rose farmer to rose dabbler in a few seconds, but it was all for the love of roses.

I signed Chris in and gave the receptionists the roses. One mother brought her babe in arms over to see them. The girl sniffed them and said, "Wow!" Later, when a lady bent down to enjoy the fragrance, I said, "How do you like my roses?"

    "Your roses?"

"They were, but I gave them to the office to enjoy." This led to a long conversation and potential visit. She wanted to know all about the roses I was growing, because she grew some too.

Shasta Daisies divide easily and wilt even easier.

    Daisies Cry for Help
Last night, after Greek class, I went outside to tend the Shasta Daisies. Optimism was building for an actual storm, so I looked for the best place for more of the stored rain. The daisies looked miserable. I carried 20 gallons of rainwater to them and watered them.

The experts say, "Divide daisies in early spring," but spring lasted only one day and summer struck with more heat than rain. The young Crepe Myrtles have been getting more rainwater, and they have responded with even more red-green new leaves and stronger branches.

Rainwater does more than provide the perfect fertilizer for plants - free, non-burning, and always welcome. The soil microbes are charged and energized to do more work. The larger creatures feed from those microbes and hold that treasury of natural growth ingredients in the top layer of soil.

The dental hygienist expressed disgust about bacteria. I was going to make this point - "How odd, because the bacteria have given your a job that pays for your house. Besides, bacterial are the foundation of all life, which is why God created them to multiply so fast. Earthworms feast on bacteria, and bacteria digest the earthworms' food for them."

But I did not even start, because she is known for filling a patient's mouth in the midst of conversation. That happened once - and I began sounding like a drowning victim - she laughed so hard. I could not convey this to her easily, but that reminded me of our daughter Erin laughing at harmless disasters, her face merry with enjoyment. The association was easy - the hygienist has the same first name.

Various conversations have told me that most gardeners know next to nothing about the soil universe they want to adjust, invade, move, water, till, fertilize, and fill with plants. But it is better to pour one bucket of rainwater than to curse the drought. I sent Erin two copies of Creation Gardening.

Creation Gardening - All Things Were Made Through Him. John 1:3

I have one more rain task before the storm comes. One barrel is half-full of rain and coffee grounds. The color and aroma are unique and not for weak. I will pour this stew on three plants:

    1. One very large Butterfly Bush
    2. One potentially large BB.
    3. One Pokeweed.

This cluster shades our bedroom office, which would normally cook in the western sun. The bushes also provide a waiting room for birds as they take turns at the thistle seed feeder. Any bush will also harbor insects, so they have some additional food available at times.

     Poke feeds the birds.

Poke flowers feed the beneficial insects.
God delights in making the most despised the most useful for His purpose.

When the Butterfly Bushes flower, they will smell like candy and attract bees and butterflies. Poke's flowers will feed beneficial insects galore and feed over 60 specials of birds. I warn jaded Southerners to treat my Pokes as free bird-feeders, not as weeds. Any violation of the 8th Commandment is followed by horticultural stink-eye.

Stink-eye  response for "I will cut down that stupid Pokeweed."

ELCA's United Lutheran Seminary Receives $30 Million Gift

United Lutheran Seminary canned Theresa Latini for not being diverse enough.

The campus of United Lutheran Seminary in Philadelphia, formerly the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Mount Airy.

United Lutheran Seminary, a theological school with campuses in Philadelphia and Gettysburg, has received a $30 million bequest from an anonymous donor, described by school officials only as a woman who lived in the Midwest and died earlier this year.
The donation — one of the largest in the history of an educational institution affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America — will be used to fund a faculty chair and student scholarships starting in the fall of next year.
It was announced May 18 on the school’s website before graduation — the first since Lutheran Theological Seminary in Mount Airy and its counterpart in Gettysburg merged last year after decades of failed attempts.
“This [donation] will have a transformative impact on educational opportunities for future leaders of the church for decades to come,” said the Rev. Angela Zimmann, vice president of institutional advancement for the 325-student United Lutheran Seminary. “We’ve been working to reduce their educational debt and make seminary education accessible to
those who feel the call to serve, and this donation will have that impact.”
The bequest was made in memory of the Rev. James Franklin Kelly, a Lutheran minister who graduated from Gettysburg Seminary in 1920, and his wife, Hope Anna Eyster Kelly.  Rev. Kelly died in 1983 at age 89, and his wife died in 1973.
Rev. Kelly served as pastor of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Wilmington from 1926 to 1953. He also led the congregations of Christ Lutheran Church in Erie and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Connersville, Ind., where he moved after he resigned from the Wilmington church.

Decline and Weakness in All the Lutheran Franchises

ELCA's leaders cannot figure why they have lost so many members since 1987.

    https://religionnews.com/2017/10/16/amid-decline-one-lutheran-church-strives-to-live-up-to-its-namesakes-spirit/

The ELCA saw its membership decline to 3.5 million members in 2016, down from 5.2 million in 1988 when the denomination was formed as a merger of three other smaller Lutheran groups. Today, 40 percent of its churches have between 50 and 100 worshippers each Sunday.

    ---
The hot air merchants of the ALPB forum discuss every reason for decline -
except their apostasy from the Word of God.
"When the Son of Man returns, will He find faith?"
Not much - but lots of UOJ.

Quote from: Pastor Ken Kimball on Yesterday at 07:56:09 PM
It's 420 congregations in the NALC today.  The 140,000 figure looks right, as do the figures for the LCMC.  The saddest thing to note is that the ELCA's membership loss at least triples the total of NALC and LCMC.  Where did those million folks go?  Not sure LCMS or any other Lutheran body got a significant boost.

The ELCA in 2006 had 4,774,203 baptized members.
In 2016 it had 3,563,842 baptized members.
    A differences of 1,210,361.

Keep your diversity selective for best results - total control!

If 490,000 of them transferred to LCMC or NALC congregations, that leaves about 720,000 unaccounted for.

The LCMS in 2006 had 2,417,999 baptized members.
In 2016 it had 2,017,834 baptized members.
    They lost over 400,000 people.

Bishop of Canada and the Inuit Nation - Susan Johnson.
Tim Glende has properly warned her against "Inuitu Fidei," the faith of the Eskimo.

I imagine that many of them went to the same places os the 720,000 missing ELCA folks. I suspect the three most common answers are:
    1. They dropped out of church.
    2. They joined the active mega-church in town.
    3. Oldsters died and were not replaced by new members.

The LCMS-WELS leaders know it and love it.

Creation Gardening Bears Fruit - The Word Is Efficacious

This three generation photo shows Baby Ichabod in the high chair, Little Ichabod holding the first of three grandchildren.

Last night we had enough rain to make the wheelbarrow damp on the inside, another reason to use stored rain before the promised rain. A reader, who currently enjoys kidding me, finishes my sentence when I say that. I told him, "Don't resist the advice."

I scanned the rose farm today. Peace roses are in full bloom in the back. The climbing rose - a gift in a plastic bag - is growing like a weed. The main rose area in front is packed with blooms and buds, including spent flowers that need to be trimmed away.

Creation Gardening bears fruit, in spite of mistakes and quirks of the weather, simply by a refusal to follow man's wisdom. Even the weeds are splendid in their growth. When a TV host was praising the value of a mosquito mist, Mrs. Ichabod thought it looked promising.

I said, "Yes, it works well. It kills the mosquitoes, the spiders, all the beneficial insects. And then the mosquitoes from next door fly in to fill the breach. The supply of pests is endless, even with constant spraying."

    Mrs. Ichabod, "Oh."

I added, "Mr. Gardener tried it. Each time it cost more to spray and did less good. But he damaged my efforts at the same time. I let him try - no advice except a word or two. He finally told me what a waste of money it was. The beneficial insects work for free and do the job 24/7."

Every single aspect of Creation Gardening works that way. Without my management, the creatures and plants work together to maximize output. Beneficial insects and spiders increase their numbers by doing their jobs. I increase their safe harbors with certain plants (mints, daisies, dandelions, sunflowers, borage, comfrey, and any carrot family member).

This works so well that beneficial wasps and hover flies follow the roses into the vases, like friends waving their tourist pals off on a big voyage. If aphids are trying to grow among the roses, beneficial eggs are about to hatch and feed on them.

I was somewhat aware of this, but Jessica Walliser made me look closer at the roses to find my little helpers.

Leave the Soil Alone - Sell the Ten HP Garden Osterizer Unit
A garden becomes far more productive when  we allow the Creator's principles to take hold, instead of thwarting every good thing with toxic fertilizer, toxic pesticides, toxic fungicides, and toxic tillers.

Bacteria are the foundation of all life. Fungi are God's Internet.
And why does water in a pool grow algae in the sunlight?
Could all this be randomly evolved?

Save all coffee grounds for the soil, for mulch around favorite plants. I add mine to rainwater, giving the stew a distinctive fragrance, swamp coffee.

Creation Garden effects from God's Word:

    • Fungus will connect all plants, feeding and watering them.
    • Birds will join spiders and beneficial insects in attacking pests.
    • Earthworms will tunnel and fertilize the soil.
    • The biomass under the surface will reach its peak and store the water and nutrition through a constant cycle of dying and feeding.
    • Roots will open up the soil and provide vast amounts of organic matter to the underground lab.
    • Butterflies and hummingbirds will visit, enjoying the abundance of nectar. Butterflies normally specialize in plants, so "weeds" like milkweed will feed the infant Monarchs, which provide a spectacular show of transfiguration, or metamorphosis in Greek.
    • The gardener will learn daily
    1. how God provides in abundance,
    2. heals wounds, and
    3. prompts thanksgiving for the blessings given from the Means of Grace, the Word and Sacraments.

Mrs. Ichabod laughed when a doctor asked about her weeding chores. She loves the result of gardening, especially with roses. She decreed, "The lawn is boring. Replace it with roses."

“Where God’s fountains of comfort flow.”

“You are today directed to God’s Word by God’s servant. You are told where God’s fountains of comfort flow. You are being pointed to the green pastures and the living waters of God’s Word. If you go to these fountains today, and find comfort and consolation, will you not go there after today also? Will you not more than ever before taste and see how good the Lord is? I hope you will do this. But if you will make the Word of God henceforth your daily study, it will bring you unspeakable blessings. It will increase and preserve your faith. It will give you hope. It will turn you from the allurements of the world to the one thing needful, to Christ and his righteousness. Is this not good? Is it not a mark of God’s love? With this before you, can you not find comfort in the abiding love of God? Can you not, though it be with streaming eyes, say: Nothing, I am certain, can turn God’s love away from me, and now I pray God, that this affliction may not turn my love away from him, but may lead me to cling to him with childlike confidence.
